Solo painting
A few landmarks
Born in 1959 in Canada and living in Switzerland since 1985. I've been drawing since my teenage years. I started painting on my own in 1990. Until 1992, I followed exclusively an abstract path. After a 5-years pause, I came back to painting and added figurative painting.
I put as much passion in abstract as in figurative painting. Even if I consider my figurative painting to be more "evocative" than realistic, I try to get as close as I can to the subject, with all the different constraints that such a medium imposes.
For figurative painting I always work from photos. I mainly use (with some exceptions) oil paint. As opposed to acrylic, oil offers a longer drying period, giving the possibility to rework a painting during several days before it dries up. I paint figurative painting on canvas, with one exception on wood. I essentially use brushes and on some occasion painting knives.
The requirements and rules that I impose myself in figurative painting are put aside when it comes to abstract painting. I simply have no rules. I start every abstract painting with the same freedom. Directions can come and go while the painting evolves. Certain themes and materials that I use are recurrent, but nothing is written in stone. As I go along a painting can change several times. I use different materials : oil and acrylic paint, chalk, pastel, sand, pieces of cloth, fabric, rags, paper etc...
My work is not related to any concept or particular quest. I prefer to let the spectator dream up his or her own vision instead of imposing my own. What dominates on top of all, is the pure pleasure of finding myself in front of an unexplored surface. To give imagination a form by trying to translate what the eye and sensitivity perceives.
