Méliès and his time op.46 (2017)

2 oboes, Bb clarinet, bass clarinet, 2 tenor saxophones, bassoon, piano
timing : 23'00''

Méliès's time op.46 saw the light of day thanks to the impulse of Jean-François Lehmann, musical director of the First Class Ensemble. This ensemble, composed of amateur musicians, usually confronts itself to musical projects associated with a theme.
Six movies are from Georges Méliès (1861-1938). His immoderate use of tricks, special effects and zany scripts, established him as one of the pioneer of silent movies. One of his well known feature is A trip to the moon. The last film in the group is Suspense by Lois Weber (1879-1939).  No less a pioneer as woman director and activist, Lois Weber already had a modern conception of movie making. Especially in her use of different forms of shots : triangular, overhead, closeup, mirror effect etc... On the level of editing, Lois Weber was also ahead of her time, knowing how to compose a cinematic progression producing an undeniable climate of suspense.
From then on, I was commissioned to compose the music for each movie.
